As the fullness of the crinoline silhouette moved toward the back of the skirt, a variety of bustle designs evolved. Often horsehair pads covered with fabric were used, but wire engineered into various shapes was another technique employed to construct the bustle. In this example wire coils serve as the support for the fullness of the drapery of the skirt. A large number of different designs were patented and often the patent number can still be seen on the bustle. In addition to a variety of shapes, bustles were also various lengths, and most styles usually had a waistband, secured with a buckle.
