Black Satin Coat with Red Fur Collar

Brief Item Record

Title: Black Satin Coat with Red Fur Collar

Date: 1920 (circa)

Description: black satin full length coat w/red fur collar; Black satin silk with black striped crepe trim and lining, and a red fur collar. This black satin full-length coat open down center front, fastened by interior snaps and two buttons: at neck and waist. It has a high crew neckline with a red fur stand up collar that can be folded in half and snapped down or unfolded to stand against neck. An attached capelet hangs from shoulders and neck at back and loops around armscye to create sleeves with open bottoms. Bands of trim in black matte crepe edge the center front, sleeve cuff and cape hem and there are horizontal knife pleat details at the sleeve cuffs. The inside is lined with striped black crepe. The line of the coat creates two bell-like forms, with volume increasing at the hem and the waist. The balance and proportion are created by the repeating bell: the larger triangle extending from the shoulders to the hem, and the smaller repeating triangle that falls only halfway down the body. This shape almost entirely obscures the body's form, and intends to create a smooth, uninterrupted line. The shiny black of the main form is outlined by the more matte crepe trim, and all is accented by the rich reddish blond fur collar.
