Public Information
The two capelets are believed to be from the 1880s, which was often referred to as the bustle period. The black color of each of these suggests they would not typically have been worn during the daytime. In the late 19th century, most women’s clothing was white or colorful. The 1880s did see darker colors than earlier years, but lighter colors were still predominant. Due to the construction and appearance of these garments, they likely had differing purposes. They are both rather formal, indicating status and perhaps temperament.
