Title: Red Fringed Coat with Paisley Trim
Date: 1915 (circa)
Description: red coat w/patterned trim and fringe; red silk, lining cream satin silk, red velvet collar facing; red, green, blue, mustard, sea green, cream silk/cotton paisley trim and slate blue, pink, purple, light blue, on red silk/cotton paisley trim. This A-line scarlet coat opens down center front, fastened by a single covered button in paisley print about 1/3 from the top of the center front length. V neckline at front has a wide collar that lies flat and covers whole of shoulder area, of contrasting paisley pattern silk faced with a red velvet backing. The three-quarter sleeves are flared and longer in front than at the back. A trim of two connected bands of different paisley designs ring the hem and cuffs. Red fringe hangs from the cuffs and hem also, adding a variation of texture and solidity in the design. The focus of the coat and its proportions is on a subtle flare. The coat from shoulders to hem increases in width, and the sleeves also follow a bugle form, widening at the cuffs. The accents of paisley are broken into three distinct registers: the top third created by the collar, the middle with the sleeve cuffs and center button, and the bottom third, edged at the hem. The shape is more or less an unbroken line, and tailors to the shoulder to bust line only by two small shoulder darts in front under the collar, and one 1/2 inch pleat at the center back, also under the collar.
