Description: Blouse and skirt (part of a bridesmaid's gown) of sheer ivory silk with inserted tucks and lace (3/4 inch strips of ivory lace). ; Skirt (part of a bridesmaid's gown) of sheer ivory silk trimmed with .75'' wide ivory lace strips: upper yoke comes to a point at center back and continues into full length panel at center front, entirely pin tucked, with 9'' above hem lace strips inserted (with silk cut away behind) horizontally/diagonally along bottom of yoke, then radiating at vertically from yoke to below hipline, 3 rows of lace inserted horizontally at about knee level, below which are 3 pin tucks, also horizontally; skirt ends in .75'' wide tucks at hemline. yoke pin tucks = by machine horizontal pin tucks = hand sewn lace inserted by machine

Grace Woodworth, aunt of Mrs. C. Lane Goss '28, wore 1992.96 as the skirt of her bridesmaid's gown for the wedding of Mrs. Goss' mother Clara Farewell Holt ex-'02, on June 25,1903. The delicate texture of the ivory silk of the skirt, accented by the soft touches of inserted lace, are a dramatic example of the early twentieth century adoption of styles previously reserved only for lingerie. While the legs, arms, and neck are still concealed by the dress, its similarity to lingerie styles implies an approach toward more revealing styles; an approach which is achieved to a much greater extent by the 1920's. The matching bodice has recently been re-discovered in the collection, but has not yet been photographed with the skirt.

25 1903 ivory silk bridesmaid's skirt 1992.96 Gift of Mrs. C. Lane Goss '28, 1977 Grace Woodworth, aunt of Mrs. C. Lane Goss '28, wore 1992.96 as the skirt of her bridesmaid's gown for the wedding of Mrs. Goss' mother Clara Farewell Holt ex-'02, on June 25,1903.
