Cream Satin Wedding Dress

Cream satin wedding dress with train. The dress has a dropped waist, full circle skirt, long fitted sleeves, and scoop neck. The train attaches to the shoulders with hooks and eyes and snaps. The train has the same cream satin fabric and layered ruffled netting underneath. The dress and train are largely hand sewn, with machine sewing for larger seams.

Rosalind Sturges née Howe (1907-1999) was a member of the Vassar Class of 1928. She was the daughter of Rhode Island architect Wallis E. Howe and Mary Locke. At Vassar, she was noted for her artistic ability, specifically in cartography featuring architectural highlights. Vassar commissioned a map from her immediately after her graduation, and her career later featured commissions for maps such as one of Wellesley College and, for Yankee Magazine's bicentennial issue, of New England's architectural heritage. Her papers and maps, the Rosalind Howe Sturges Allen Papers ca 1928-1999, now reside in the Vassar Special Collections Library. She married Rev. Philemon Sturges shortly after graduation. The couple had four children and lived in Philadelphia after shorter stints in Oregon and Massachusetts. This piece was worn by Rosalind in her wedding and donated by Elizabeth Allen, the wife of Rosalind's grandson.
