Public Information

from the donor: "1987 – It got so by the end of the evening if I heard one more person toast “the Dress” while making little mention of me, the bride in it, HELLO… Actually the dress was amazing. It was my mother-in-law’s, circa mid-fifties, and she had been a Southern belle from Bowling Green, KY marrying that Italian (Eye-talian according to her father) from NYC whom she met while they were both interning at Columbia-Presbyterian. So this dress had petticoats, it had hoops, it had lead weights inside it hanging from strings to keep the bodice from riding up above the petticoats. The skirt took up the whole church aisle. My dad had to walk behind me to give me away because he couldn’t fit beside me. Of course it had the prerequisite 8,000 cloth-covered buttons on the back. The most amazing thing was the zig-zags of lace that ran throughout the skirt and inset into it somehow – not just appliqued on it. I did kind of make it my own by bringing the neckline down during tailoring so it hit me just right on the sides of my shoulders. I got to wear it because I was marrying the first of her four sons to make the commitment.

Thirteen years after the divorce I still adore my mother-in-law, as amazing a combination of strong and generous and sweet as I have ever met, and who eventually forgave me for messing up the marriage. It helps that I gave her two grandsons (one who just completed Vassar, one about to start) that she is just crazy about."
