It was my mother-in-law’s, circa mid-fifties, and she had been a Southern belle from Bowling Green, KY marrying that Italian (Eye-talian according to her father) from NYC whom she met while they were both interning at Columbia-Presbyterian. So this dress had petticoats, it had hoops, it had lead weights inside it hanging from strings to keep the bodice from riding up above the petticoats. The skirt took up the whole church aisle. My dad had to walk behind me to give me away because he couldn’t fit beside me. Of course it had the prerequisite 8,000 cloth-covered buttons on the back. The most amazing thing was the zig-zags of lace that ran throughout the skirt and inset into it somehow – not just appliqued on it. I did kind of make it my own by bringing the neckline down during tailoring so it hit me just right on the sides of my shoulders. I got to wear it because I was marrying the first of her four sons to make the commitment.

Thirteen years after the divorce I still adore my mother-in-law, as amazing a combination of strong and generous and sweet as I have ever met, and who eventually forgave me for messing up the marriage. It helps that I gave her two grandsons (one who just completed Vassar, one about to start) that she is just crazy about."

Ny dress was cotton, mid-calf length. (I still have it if you're interested.) We were married in a function room of the Taft Hotel in New Haven, CT, by the Cantor of the local Reform Temple. We met as graduate students at Yale, Fred in Political Science and I in English. The wedding was small (close family and a handful of friends) about 30 people in all. Sorry I did not make your May 1 deadline. I am packing to move and it took some time to unearth the photo. Barbara E. Greenstein.</text>

When Kevin and I began to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted to reflect our non traditional taste and our particular love of style and design. No stuffy sit down dinner or ceremony based on religious traditions we didn't uphold. So we wrote our own vows and were married at sunset on a downtown manhattan rooftop by a dear family friend.

Our "cocktail wedding" was more like the best party we'd ever throws. The invite was a CD case with album art containing the event details. I tried on some gowns at boutiques for the fun of it, but could never picture myself in a tradtional floor length gown. A lifelong clothing and costume designer, I designed and made my own dress, a 50s inspired silhouette with leather and metal hardware details."</text>

<text>from the donor: "My grandmother was a Vassar graduate -- class of 1913. She attended Vassar as Dorothy Titus and was known as "Dar." She was the first of her class to marry (on June 30, 1913) and she wore a gorgeous gown. Her wedding picture is attached. She married an Englishman named Hamilton Webb, and my father, Hamilton Brookholding Webb, was the first baby born to a member of the class of 1913 (his birthday was April 2, 1914).

I was named Dorothy Titus Webb for my grandmother and have always been known as Dar, as she was. I graduated from Vassar in the class of 1968 and married for the first time 30 years later at the improbable age of 51. My wedding was decidedly less romantic than my grandmother's. After a somewhat long engagement (we'd been living together for almost twenty years) my partner in life -- Clint Page -- and I trundled off to a justice of the peace on December 17, 1998. I (correctly) reasoned that my husband-to-be would rather not celebrate his marriage to a bride wearing blue jeans, so I broke out my favorite khaki slacks -- a big concession on my part. My niece later advised me to hang them on a padded hangar in the back of my closet so that future generations of brides could wear them. Our attendants were my father (that same first child of the class of 1913), my stepmother, and my husband's daughter Christine. We all went out for a pizza afterwards.

People ask me why Clint and I married after such a long time together unmarried. We like to say it was to make two very special people -- our accountant and our lawyer -- happy.
